SENSE OF OWNERSHIP

Residents should feel a sense of ownership within their units and bedrooms. The space is designed to feel as much like an apartment building as possible in lieu of feeling like a shelter or institution. Residents may retreat to their own private spaces, while also having access to shared amenity-style kitchen and lounge areas. Those residents in apartment-style units can invite guests into their units.

RESILIENCE OF CONCEPT & PLACE

Using similar design concepts and elements from their South location, we are able to propose a healthy and more efficient environment based on the program required by both residents and staff. This is done while maintaining as much of the existing exterior infrastructure as possible. The project will supply resilience in materiality with durable and cost effective building materials that allow the building to continue to be adaptable throughout the remainder of its lifecycle.

PLACE OF REFUGE

The project will provide safe and secure housing to the community. Affected youths will have a sense of refuge allowing them the mental space to focus on healing and personal growth in a time of crisis. Tranquil and biophilic-like materials will be utilized throughout the building to help aid in the reduction of stress and improve emotional wellbeing of residents and staff.
